A Different Kind of 2-Piece

I’ve always said that the most important rule of fashion is to always to keep it simple. Menswear has been moving closer to a streamlined aesthetic, and as a result you don’t have to do much to create a look that helps you stand out in a crowd. In 2022 designers have taken to simplified menswear even more with the offering of the 2-piece sets.

Matching sets is a “new way” to capture the simplified chic look without over thinking.   This trend pays attention to details ranging from interesting colour combinations to fit, so it’s nice to not have to think about your look as much. You can add personality through the addition of accessories that reflect your style.  

The objective is simple: a good 2-piece set should be classic, effortless, and simple. It should inspire confidence, motivate self-worth and most importantly be something that can be easily mixed and matched with other items. If you’re an adventurous dresser, then this is the least exciting thing happening in fashion. A matching set can dull the creative approach some men take with their fashion, but there are still opportunities to play around with it. 

Now, in western fashion this is a new trend emerging but for men of Asian, Middle Eastern, African, and Latin backgrounds it’s a part of the culture. A matching set is something that has always been in fashion. I always have a little laugh when (some) designers, stylist, and brands act as though this is something that has never been done until now, and I think “so you have no diversity in your life?”  This is a concept that has NEVER gone away.

Anyway, the point I am trying to make is, if you're looking to hit the refresh button on your closet and not sure where to begin consider investing in a couple matching sets. It’s a subtle way of getting reacquainted with dressing up for the day. The appeal of a matching set is that it’s just as effective and leisurely as the classic Adidas tracksuit or a comfortable pair of pj’s. It’s a cheat guide for the style challenged guy to level up without stressing himself out. 

Two-piece sets are a great way to revitalize on your wardrobe without having to buy and obscene number of pieces. What makes a matching set so brilliant is the similarity in design, quality, and material; that both pieces are made from the same material, color, and print. Remember to shop for timeless pieces that can easily be deconstructed to be paired with your basics. Take advantage of the warmer weather and remix the look with a simple button up or white t-shirt. Or switch out the pants for a light pair of jeans, or khakis.
