What’s Trending: Fall 2022
With Summer officially in the rear-view, most guys will use this time to adjust their closet, pack away their t-shirts and shorts or put away those linen suits. Fall has always been seen as the season for fashionable guys. Lush colours, layered pieces, and structured fits the options are endless! For many men this is the season where they truly shine in showing off one’s true style.
This season I’m seeing the reinvention of classic staples as well as the evolution of men’s fashion. Designers have added a creative flair to traditionally structured garments while pushing several silhouette boundaries. Menswear this season will be filled with fashion-forward classics, modernized takes on nostalgic trends, and unlike what we have seen previously, streamlined cuts and tailored draping and structured and relaxed fits.
Big Shoulders
First off, procced with caution on this trend, because it’s very easy to look entirely disproportionate. Several designers are playing with shoulder and overly padding them to create a “V” affect with male silhouette. Several runway presentations have done everything from trench coats, blazers, and jackets with sharp and edgy shoulders to comically large shoulder pads.
The exaggerated shoulders lend itself to craft an angular structured garments to mimic or elaborate inhumanly synched waists, in a range of fabrics and patterns. I think this is a look for guys with more narrow shoulders. If you’re a guy with broad shoulders, it’ll serve you best to not take part in this trend. I’ll be honest I’m not totally entirely gong ho on this trend. For guys with a slim build how you pair the lower half with the top half can have you looking like 2 inverted triangles. And if you’re a thicker man it could have you looking bigger than you are.
Double Breasted Coats
This is a trend that always circles back in men’s fashion every couple of years, an although it’s seen a separate trend it ties directly into the shoulders trend, as it will help balance out the proportions on the body. This classic tailoring style is having a renaissance for fall and winter. However, this time designers are no limiting double breasted tailoring to just over coats and jackets, it’s also being seen in button up shirts, sweaters, and cardigans. However, it doesn’t end there as the classic style is combined and revamped with a prominent hourglass silhouette which adds a slight feminine touch to classic men’s tailoring staple.
Leather/Pleather Everything
Leather has become one of the most popular seasonal staples for the autumn season, and this year designers have found a new way to revamp the classic fabric. This season get ready to see full leather looks, everything from draped leather trousers to polished leather jackets and edgy ultra-long coats and even some lambskin blazers.
Now, I will not be taking part in the full leather looks simply because I think all that leather will either make me look like I’m auditioning for the Village People, joining a biker gang, or recreating any Bad Boy music video from the early 2000’s. I’m good.
Dressing Gown Coat
I’m pretty pumped for this trend, I’ve always loved a dramatic coat and this is finally the year for it! This look is made up of a soft-shouldered construction, a wrap around waist belt, and ideally, a shawl lapel a dressing gown coat is about to be EVERYWHERE this season.
All the major designers like Dior, Prada, Versace and Dole & Gabana are applying the same precision of couture gowns to these dramatic coats. Often made from the finest fabrics these coats were a mainstay of masculine wardrobes, layered over a well-structured but minimal in design look. A dressing gown coats is the perfect luxury piece for almost any type of look. Not athleisure though. The silhouette commands people to take notice either done up or unbuttoned.
Denim on Denim
Now, I’ve never played cowboy or rodeo kings as a child, but this season designers are encouraging men to embrace or discover their inner cowboy with denim on denim. I’m aware that Men’s and women’s fashion trends often coincide but denim on denim otherwise know as the Canadian tuxedo has never been a good look and had not looked good on anyone.
Designers first reintroduced this during Fendi, Amiri and Bianca Sanders Spring/Summer 2023 presentations, but for fall they opted to go beyond just a denim jacket and jeans. This season you’ll be seeing denim bucket hats, frayed hems, oversized shirts, and baggy jeans. I suppose the idea is to look like you just a Levis factory. My advice? Go slow, maybe start by incorporating a piece of untraditional denim into your overall look and layering as the temperatures drop from there. That way if you’re not feeling it no harm no foul, and you can move on without buying a bunch of denim you won’t be wearing.
Pattern Sets
This is look I’m happy will be coming along with us past the Simmer season. A pattern set is one of the easiest ways to make your outfit more interesting without over thinking it or strong fashion statement with minimal effort. Guys, this is a foolproof look because even if you opt for a wild pattern, the monochrome effect of the ensemble will look sleek and put together.
I hope this break down of looks helps you with your fall shopping and you’re not overwhelmed by what they stores are offering. I would really love to hear your thought on these trends, is there anything you eager to try? Are there some you plan to avoid like the plague? As always let’s keep the conversation going!
