6 Tip to Elevate Grey Sweats
Autumn is the season for the fashionable to make some daring moves. Between the latest trends showcased on the runways, and the change in temperature most guys switch between structured garments and cozier pieces. With that said a popular fall staple is a pair of grey sweatpants.
Grey sweats have quickly become an important statement piece in men’s fashion. It’s comfortable, stylish, and foolproof. A sweatsuit is an outfit that’s impossible to screw up, however, because it’s the easiest look to pull off most men get stagnant and lazy with their approach.
The average pair grey sweats are usually seen as loungewear basics that at one-time were something you’d only wear at home or at the gym. But in the last couple of years have now become an acceptable and stylish alternative to jeans or other casual pants. The only problem is that most guys don’t know exactly how to style them to achieve the elevated look I’m referring to. So today I’m going to break down 6 ways you can elevate the average grey sweats.
Look Beyond the Sports Brands
Most guys start off will start off with the right idea invest in a sweatsuit with quality fabric, this usually means they’ll hit up Nike, Adidas, Puma or Rebook. But plenty of guys fail to consider brands like Cole Buxton, John Elliott and JW Anderson. These designers carry a wider range of cuts, higher grains of fabric that will last longer and don’t have the obnoxious logo.
Break Up the Set
A common look that guys will do is simply buy a sweatsuit and only wear it out only as a set. I think another way to create a sleek look is to break up the set. Personally, when I do wear my sweats out I like to keep the monochromatic vibe going. Consider pairing your grey sweatpants with a crew neck sweater that best matches the colour of the pants. And for a touch of colour, I might wear a different colour beanie or t-shirt underneath.
It's All in the Details
Grey sweats work best with street style, so look for details that heighten the garment and effortlessly standout. Consider picking a different shade in the colour, try a 5-pocket pant instead of the traditional 2. Buy a set that has a crew neck top or a zip up sweater instead of a hoodie. The different details make it easier to play around with the garment and try new things with it.
When in Doubt Add a Layer
This is probably the easiest way to elevate sweats, adding an additional layer makes a huge difference to a basic outfit. Things like a denim jacket, neutral overcoat, or my favorite a white button up shirt underneath the hoodie makes a statement. It’s effortless and bold. The contrast turns the average sweatsuit into a stylish and relaxed outfit, perfect for almost any weekend event.
Up the Silhouette
With oversized cuts returning to the fashion forefront, consider choosing an oversized silhouette that drapes the body. Jerry Lorenzo is an excellent example of how to do this effortlessly. Lorenzo’s made a name for himself with his easy wearing, effortlessly cool approach to menswear. This look gives the “I just threw this on” vibe while still presenting a polished presentation.
Blazers, Bombers, and Biker Jackets still Work
A lot of guys forget that sweats are a surprisingly versatile piece of clothing and can even be paired with the most unlikely garments like a blazer. Adding a blazer adds a slightly more polished and partially relaxed contrast to a look. This unique combination creates a striking appearance. To make the look work, keep your color palette dark or neutral and opt for a less structured blazer. Opting for a casual button-up or your favorite piece of knitwear.
There you have it, I hope you’ll consider trying out some of these suggestions and reassess how you wear your sweats or consider giving a new take on it. But as always, I’d love to hear from you guys on this one. Let’s keep the conversation going in the comments below.
