A Fresh Take on Collegiate Style
Fashion is a cyclical industry, trends are constantly changing and what was old is now deemed new again. In 2022, one of the biggest style trends in men’s wear is collegiate/preppy fashion. There are several brands that have been consistent mainstays of this look, however, it’s been a consistent theme throughout all the major runway presentations. Classic oxford button up, varsity jackets and nautical V-neck sweaters are now in a higher demand than before. So, as most men are beginning to retire the popular athleisure wave, I thought it would be nice to discuss the latest trend and how you can build the look without breaking the bank to get it.
The collegiate look has been all over the runways since last year. However, it’s now in such high demand that the even the everyday guy are eager to tryout the look. I’ll be honest although there are several elements of preppy fashion that my personal style does gravitate towards, it’s a style that’s rooted in incredibly elitist, and racist history.
The preppy look originated in early 1900’s by young, upper-middle class college students that were predominantly white. It was seen as a younger and more modernized alternative for well to do Ivy League kids who wanted to distinguish themselves from the traditional and stuffy professional dress they were seeing on professors and administrators on campus. This became a popular and suitable alternative in clothing associated with high sadiddy activities like golfing, boating, and rowing. So, I am very happy to see young men of colour reimagining and bringing new life to it.
With all that said it’s not a bad look and I think many men would benefit from taking elements from it. So now let’s work on building the look. In 2022, the key to integrating trends into your closet successfully is building strong basics that can be interchangeable with whatever’s trending and going from there.
The main idea to accurately pulling of collegiate style is to treat the dress codes with irreverence. The key is to not look over done, or that you’re trying too hard. Find well-tailored pieces that are classic cuts and fits. Another tip to pulling off the preppy look is to follow this guide: 2 solids and one pattern.
If you’re doing it right it should result in a combination of effortlessness and good taste that makes you look, put together, without looking like you’ve spent hours putting your look together. So how is it done? Well, it’s not rocket science (getting dressed never should be). The key items to any have at your fingertips are the following:
- Collared button ups
- Classic khakis or chinos
- Loafers, lace-ups and white tennis shoes
- Simples checkered or stripped patterns
- Non distressed denim
If you want to add some additional layers to your look add the following:
- Polo Shirt
- Varsity Jackets
- Campus Sweatshirt
- White Low-Top Sneakers
- Nautical Sweater
So, now that you know where to start let’s narrow down where you should be shopping to get the best result for your money. These brands are my first suggestions for anyone interested in this trend and has enough sense to not send $200 on a sweater from a luxury brand.
- Banana Republic
- Tommy Hilfiger
- -Nautica Appeal Inc.
- J. Crew
- Polo by Ralph Lauren
- Brooks Brothers
It’s easy to get enthusiastic about doing something new but remember trying a new look shouldn’t endanger you to funds. Anyway, I’d love to hear from you, what are your thoughts on collegiate/preppy style? Is it a style you’ll be trying out this Spring or is it a hard pass? As always let’s keep the conversation going in the comments section. Until next time.
