What’s Trending: Spring 2022

Another season another batch of trends to explore, Spring 2022 is going to introduce some interesting looks. Much like the rest of the world fashion is evolving and several of the Spring/Summer 2022 shows were considerably more exciting to watch. Designers are pulling inspirations from different artistic genres and decades to create some of the year’s latest trends. There are daring colours, risky features, and fabrics you’d never expect for Spring/Summer so 2022 is going to be an interesting one to watch.

For many designers the vibe for the Spring season was revisiting some of the standout trends of decades past. These designers offered a modern twist that won’t have you looking like to went rummaging through your grandfather’s closet. The silhouettes are iconic, the colours are bold, and the fabrics are more natural. So, in honour of the transition to this new season, I wanted to take a moment and highlight 5 of the trends that stood out for Spring/Summer 2022.

Bell Bottoms aka Flared Trousers

If you’ve ever seen Saturday Night Fever or even That 70’s Show, then you’re familiar with this look. Although not exactly ground-breaking many designers have flipped the concept of the traditional fitted bell bottom of the 70’s and managed to incorporate the looseness of the wide leg pant. The result being a modernized hybrid that isn’t dated and offers clean lines that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Sleeve-Free Shirts

As I mentioned in the Winter edition of What’s Trending vests are making a comeback. However, for the Spring/Summer 2022 season, the trend has gone into overdrive! Brands like Rick Owens, Paul Smith and Armani have chosen to do away with sleeves and opted to introduce sleeveless knitted ponchos, blazers, waistcoats, and hoodies for the season. I believe this is there way of making the look of the vest edgier. Hard pass for me! Something about it screams unfinished or fresh out the gym, no thanks. But to all the guys who spent the last 2 years working out and dying to show off your gains, do you!

Cut-Out Tops

Now this one’s a head scratcher, some designers have taken to the idea of cut-outs in menswear’s. The return of Courregés, a French label that had a huge reception for menswear presentations this year has made cut-outs a thing for this season. The labels designer Nicolas Di Felice has crafted slick new silhouettes for the Spring/Summer. It’s also been included in work from Riccardo Tisci at Burberry and Jonathan Anderson at Loewe, however, this is one trend I have zero interest in exploring. I think it could be a great look for the skater grunge crowd, or even the leather rocker scene but not this guy.

Bold Sandals

I have no idea what inspired this trend, but I sincerely hope it’s the first one to go, quickly! Designers decided they wanted to get playful with sandals and honestly, I think it’s because LVMH Fashion Group recently bought Birkenstock and needed a new way to get people talking. Now almost all the fashion houses are trying to make this a must have, no thanks.

Shinny Suits

If I were Diddy I would demand my cut, the reimaging of shinny suits is a look that you better get ready to see a lot of. With the number of restrictions being lifted, and people being away from friends, everyone is looking to be seen and men’s formal wear is doing its best to help men stand out. Shinny suits were on the runways of Dolce & Gabbana, Etro, Moschino, Dior, Loewe and though it’s a great look for an editorial fashion shoot, red carpets, or music videos I don’t see this look being well received for the everyday party. So, on this one I will say guys treed lightly.

And there it is. I would really love to hear from you in the comments about what you think of these trends that will be hitting the streets soon. Are there any looks you’re ready to try out? Or are you not feeling any of them at all? As always let’s keep the conversation going!
