Hey, Let’s Get Away
We outside! Patios are open, the streets are buzzing, and the mall is filled with shoppers hunting for the latest fashions. Another industry seeing loads of business is travel, and after 18 months of restrictions and social distancing many people are ready to get out of the cities to enjoy some new views. Summer has always been the season for travel, so let me bless you with some tips to ensure that you’re looking your very best for your siesta abroad.
Most summer getaways are usually a 3-day weekend or 10 days away, so to remove the stress remember to keep your looks simple and versatile. I have five tips to make sure that you avoid packing your entire wardrobe when you’ll only be away for 4 days. ***Please note there is no mention of draws, swim trunks, or sleep wear. But I will say if you don’t know you’ll at minimum need a pair of fresh draws for every day of your trip and need clean pair of swim trunks for taking a dip in the pool… you need help beyond this blog. Now, let’s get into these tips.
Embrace the Carry On
If you’re packing a large suitcase for a two-day trip, you’ve already done too much. Make it easy on yourself and go with a simple carry on. A good carry on will comfortably hold everything you’d need for your trip. Also, if you’re taking a flight, it will eliminate lost luggage issues when you arrive. If you have more items that won’t fit in your carry on add a backpack for more space. When choosing luggage pick something durable that can handle getting thrown around.
I suggest a “lived-in” leather duffle bag as a carry-on option which allows you to balance practicality and good style.
3 is the Magic Number
When it comes to your pants, I believe in the rule of 3. A pair of trousers, a pair of shorts and a pair of chinos. It’s summertime and I usually retire my jeans during this season, but to each his own. I prefer the look of chinos, trousers, and khakis, they easily transition from casual to semi-formal occasions effortlessly. But, if you are going to pack a pair of jeans, I’d suggest comfortable pre-washed, worn-in denim. It will be easier to roll up into your luggage and lends itself to the easy, breezy relaxed look.
Step Your Shirt Game Up
For shirts, it’s important to have a reasonable number of options I’ve always thought 5 was a reasonable number to pack. 2 button ups, 2 t-shirts and a polo. This allows for a good number of mix-and-match options. You can layer the button-up over the tee, and keep it unbuttoned for a relaxed look. The polo is great for some casual sharpness.
Don’t Over Think Your Shoe Game
I’ve said it many at time on this blog, I’m not a sneaker head. I’m not stalking Foot Locker, Hotbox or Hoop It Up for the latest releases. So, for a weekend getaway I’m good with packing two pairs of shoes. I would choose a loafer, sneakers for the commute and tourist walking and a pair of house slippers (because hotel rooms are bacteria traps, and no slippers means yours toes are being violated). Basically, in the shoe department just aim for shoes that will pair nicely with the items packed and give you a few practical options.
Keep It Fresh
Pack a strong dopp kit. In case you forgot a dopp kit is for your travel size toiletries bag. Please stop using a Ziploc bag for your toiletries. You’re grown now, you wear big boy pants so you have earned the right to own a dopp kit. I like to use brands that offer travel size options which make it easier to pack or a trip. Check out brands like Kiehl’s, Dove Care and Clinique.
My list is complete! I hope you take advantage of these tips when you travel. Enjoy the summer weather with friends, family and loved ones. Drop a line in the comments about you’ve been up to since restrictions have lifted.
