Thrifting 101: Tips for Successfully Thrift Shopping

I have a love hate relationship with thrift shopping. On one had I enjoy the thrill of finding a great piece of clothing that will perfectly compliment my wardrobe, and on the other hand I have long arms which is already a challenge for me when I shop at the retail level, so you can only imagine how annoying it can be when I go thrift shopping.  There are so many things that I have learned from my countless excursions and from talking to other thrifters. I’ll never claim to be an expert at the process, but I have found some tips that have done wonders to enhance my closet.

Personally, I think thrifting is a great way to build an affordable wardrobe that can stretch the smallest budget. For other’s it's a lifestyle choice that promotes sustainability, uniqueness, and a sense of adventure. I can’t even begin to tell you the countless hours I’ve spent in various Value Villages, Salvation Army’s and recently Market By The Pound in addition to several consignment shops where I’ve secured some of my most treasured pieces. Today I want to provide some insight and tips to maximizing your thrift shopping experience.

Patience Is Key

The most important tip I could ever offer is to practice patience. Thrift stores are like entering a black hole of clothing, and great pieces can be missed if you don’t have take your time sifting through racks. Unlike mainstream retail spaces, thrift stores have a selection of clothing from different decades, eras, styles, and brands. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and “Forget this!”

Visit Regularly

Thrift store receives more product daily than Walmart during the holiday season. So, I encourage people to check in often. I usually commit to popping in at least once every couple of months, however, I’ve built a strong wardrobe that doesn’t require me to consistently shop for new items. For a lot of socially conscious consumers thrifting is its positive impact on the environment. Regularly thrift shopping reduces the demand for new production and lowering the overall carbon footprint associated with clothing.

Quality Control

While thrift shopping is known for its affordability, it's essential to recognize that a vital component is the quality of the thrifted items. There’s be times I found pieces that look like a dog went to town and rather than tossing the garment in the trash someone just dumped it in a donation pile. It’s incredibly insulting to the staff that have to sort everything before it goes on the sales floor, the organization it was donated to and the people shopping there. Personally, when I donate items, I make sure there in the best possible condition for the next owner. The concept behind thrifting is pre-loved and not sloppy seconds. Aim to shop for pieces that can still be worn in public and survive a trip to the dry cleaners or a cycle in the washing machine.

DIY Potential

I mentioned my frustrations with second-hand shopping earlier, but something I’ve come to expect is that I may have to edit my purchases and have a tailor redesign the garment. I like to look beyond the items current state and what can be done with it. Whether it’s turning a long sleeve button up to a short-sleeve or flipping a pair of chinos into jogger with and elastic ankle.

Something people seem to forget is that most thrift stores are community-driven organizations that support local charities and provide employment opportunities for individuals in need. The same can be said when you bring garments to your local cleaners and tailors for alterations. Doing this is a great way to further support local businesses and collaborate with people that are knowledgeable in garment care and help you reimagine your finds.

Beyond the economic advantages, I believe thrift shopping will continue to be the go-to response to combat the rise of fast fashion. I hope my advice helps you during your next trip to a thrift shop. So, next time you're looking to refresh your wardrobe, consider embarking on a thrifting adventure – you might just find more than just clothes, you'll find a new perspective on fashion and sustainability.
