Revitalize Your Space: The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Out Your Closet

As the countdown to Spring is literally days away, it’s fair to assume that everyone is actively looking to make closet updates. A cluttered closet can be a source of stress and frustration, but with a bit of time and effort, you can transform it into an organized and functional space. Cleaning out your closet is not just about creating more physical space, it's also an opportunity to let go of pieces that no longer fit you physically, get rid of items that have seen better days or let go of pieces that don’t match your current style aesthetics. In this blog post, I want to guide you through my process of cleaning out your closet, to helping you achieve a sense of order and simplicity in your life.

Step 1: The most important task before you pull a single item out is to set clear and manageable objectives regarding your vision for your style and closet. I believe in buying with purpose and not just because, so for me everything that’s in my closet serves a purpose. My style goals consist of what I like, what worked and what didn’t as well as thing s I’d like to try and explore. Ask yourself are you looking to create more space, update your worn pieces, or simply declutter? Setting clear objectives will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the process.

Step 2: Empty your closet. It sounds basic enough, but most people will pull items that stand out or they’ve known for a while they plan to purge and leave the bulk of the closet in tack. I can’t stress how important this step is. Take everything out and lay it on your bed or another surface. This not only gives you a blank canvas to work with but also allows you to assess the contents of your closet more effectively.

Step 3: When most guys conduct a closet refresh the sorting process will solely consist of items that stay and what items can go. Now, my process is a bit more layered than that. I have several piles in place to keep, donate, sell, or discard. Be honest with yourself during this process and consider factors such as fit, wear, and personal style. If you haven't worn an item in the last year, it may be time to let it go.

Step 4: Clean and Refresh While your closet is empty, take the opportunity to clean and refresh the space. Dust shelves, vacuum the floor, and consider adding scented sachets or fresheners to keep your clothes smelling pleasant. A clean and inviting closet makes it easier to maintain the organization.

Step 5: With the most difficult part of the process done, it’s important to not just cram everything back into your closet. Look at your space and figure out a new lay out that’ll better organize and maximize the space as you start putting items back into your closet. Consider purchasing new storage pieces that will make your closet more functional and easier to manage. Upgrade the quality of your hangers, use storage bins or baskets for smaller items and accessories, and consider adding shelves or hooks for additional storage. It’s the little things that make your space more manageable as well as aesthetically pleasing.

Step 6: This is the fun part, I like to go through my donation and sell pile and figure out if it’s worth donating to charity thrift shops or a consignment store. I’ll also take photos for my Depop page and create a description. Not only does this help someone in need, but it also reduces waste and promotes sustainability.

Step 7: Closet maintenance is the step most guys forget about. It’s important to regularly clean and maintain your new closet, it’s not a one-time task but an ongoing process. Make it a habit to regularly assess your wardrobe and repeat the cleaning process as needed. I tend to re-evaluate my closet at the beginning of each season, this helps me stay organized and prevent clutter from accumulating.

A well-organized and clutter-free closet can have a positive impact on your daily life. By following these steps and committing to regular maintenance, you can create a space that not only reflects your personal style but also contributes to a sense of calm and order in your home. Take the first step today and embark on the journey to a revitalized closet and a more organized life. With that said drop a comment below about how you manage your closet maintenance, and let’s keep the conversation going.
