What’s Trending: Highlights from Fashion Week 2024

2024 is going to be the year to experiment with style, and the Spring/Summer season is going to introduce some interesting looks. Although I’m eager to try some of trends there’s others I will happily skip. This year will have a noticeable shift towards redefining seasonal classics and daring to explore new pairings. Each trend, from the formal shorts, reimagined button ups and utility pieces to the luxury-infused workwear, and the daring sheer outfits are meant to lure menswear to a world where personal expression and functionality meet cohesively. Before we jump into the latest trends, I feel like it’s worth noting that there as opportunities to bring back pieces that have been sitting in the back of your closet.

With that said let discuss a few of the standout trends for Spring/Summer 2024.

Formal Shorts

For some reason men’s designers are taking inspiration from the kid’s section when it comes to formal wear and business casual styling. Short hemlines were a noticeable theme for many runways. I touched on this trend in 2022, however, it looks like it will really be picking up in 2024. While wearing short is probably not appropriate for most office settings, you can expect this to be a popular street-style look. I’ll be first to say this one is a hard no for me, I’m not into it and I officially opt out.

Welcome to the Halter

I need to know who thought this was a good look because I have questions. Apparently, men’s halter tops are now a thing, and again this is yet another no for me. The male halter top was a thing in the very late 80’s and early 90’s, and I get it they show off your arms, highlight the outer edge of your collarbone and are a little flirty and unexpected, but no. Brands like Fendi provided a utilitarian example of how a halter top could be styled while Dolce & Gabbana opted to layer a halter vest to elevate an otherwise minimalist look.

High Wasted/Tapered Waist

I love this one, and I’ve been waiting to see a resurgence in this look. The tapered silhouette with an emphasis on the waistline is all over the runways and will serves as a welcomed return to classic tailoring in menswear. Brands like Rick Owens, Jonathan Anderson and Prada have infused the traditional silhouettes with a modern energy that elevates the male form. Crafted to highlight the illusion of an elongated torso, accentuating the natural lines of the body is done to perfection. I think this is one of the few trends that spark a conversation about the architecture of menswear.

Crop It

Now, this one can get tricky. With the continued popularity of Y2K fashion, it was only a matter of time before this look returned, cropped sweaters. I’ve been seeing this all-over social media before it hit the runways, thanks Tik Tok. The cropped boxy sweater which was a staple to many back in the day has returned, and although it wasn’t my thing back then I do see the appeal now. Thankfully, several designers have eliminated the rough DIY version many created for themselves and replaced it with well-constructed garments that hit all the right parts on the body. I’d recommend the Daniel Simmons collection, Conner McKnight, or Gallery Dept for the cropped look done right.

High Fashion Work Wear

I always have mixed feelings when it comes to designers cosplaying poor, and to be honest it was bound to come back. Brands are integrating utility pieces with slight elevation. jackets with pronounced pockets and utilitarian details, to the monochromatic color scheme and clean lines elevate the look beyond the realms of manual labor, presenting workwear as street style, signifying that utility and comfort can indeed walk hand in hand with luxury and relaxed fashion sensibilities.

And there it is. I would really love to hear from you in the comments about what you think of these trends that will be hitting the streets soon. Are there any looks you’re ready to try out? Or are you not feeling any of them at all? As always let’s keep the conversation going!
