5 Tips to Simplifying Everyday Closet Struggles

For some guys this looks daunting. It’s a task they’d rather not attempt or better yet let someone else do it. With Spring coming there’s no better time to make your closet work for you. These are 5 base level things to better organize your closet and make it a structured space for you.

1. Gut Your Closet

Take everything out and I do mean EVERYTHING. Most of the time when people say they're cleaning out their closet they usually take out a portion or certain things in the closet, but ultimately run into the same issues 4 months down the line because it wasn’t a truly through clear out. By doing this it provides you with a completely blank canvas that can give you better idea of how to best structure your closet.

2. Be Honest with Yourself

Don’t make excuses for the clothes you haven’t worn in a year. Usually I’d say 6 months, but I live in a seasonal country and there’s certain articles of clothes I can’t give a 6-month timeline to. If you still have clothing with tags (I don’t know why) think about reselling them (Apps like Posh Mart) or donating them to friends, family or charity.

3. Asses What You Have

Now that you’ve done the hard part you can move on to the fun stuff. Reassess your look, things that looked great 10 years ago may not work today. You may have gained or lost weight, switched from a corporate to more relaxed career path and your closet doesn’t really reflect that. Distressed denim, graphic tees and tops with holes in them were on trend not too long ago so it’s a safe bet to let them go.

4. Make A List

The next step in your closet overhaul is to make a list. Figure out what your closet is missing, do you need more formal shirts to go with the suits in your closet, are you in need of more casual pants like denim, chinos and khakis, or do you simply want to replace that old turtleneck or a pair of white sneakers that have just hit their expiration, put it on the list! By writing it all down it will make your next shopping excursion so much easier.

5. Reorganize Your Space

You’ve done all the work and now’s the time to put your closet back together. Invest in necessary storage pieces that will make getting dressed easier whether it’s bins for your sweaters, switching to all wooden hangers, buying boxes to preserve your hats or adding a shoe rack get what you need to preserve the quality of your clothing. I subscribe to a colour coating system, it’s easier to keep organized and faster to pull from when I get ready. Another tip is to keep the specific pieces in the back of your closet (i.e., a suit, cultural pieces and winter coats when the weather changes)
