It’s All in the Details: Investing in New Essentials
It’s a new year and Spring is literally two weeks away and the world is slowly opening up again. As many people have been quarantining at home, you’ve likely spent a lot of time in your favourite pajamas or sweats. At some point you’re going to come out of hibernation, so why not make a statement with some simple upgrades to your look.
Sweaters
Is the weather a bit warmer? Yes, but don’t go crazy. Think about upgrading your sweater game this year with a subtle twist. Try mixing things up with a nautical crew neck sweater. This type of sweater has a neutral colour palate that will go with almost everything in your closet. You may also want to consider trying something a little bolder like a v neck version in a bolder colour as seen below.
Denim
I’m pretty sure distressed denim is FINALLY over (I never got it and don’t wanna rehash it). Denim should be treated as an investment, a good pair of jeans should last you between 5 – 10 years easy! I think 3 jeans in your wardrobe will take you far. I’ve invested in a light blue, a dark blue and a black pair and they have been more than enough to keep my closet fresh. As for the cut, a slim relaxed fit will eliminate having to break them in.
Accessories
Really think about this, have you ever been out running errands and spot a guy wearing a similar version of your outfit? Adding some jewellery or new hat can make all the difference in defining your style. No one’s saying you’ve got to look like a member of Dip Set or BTS. Consider how adding a thin chain, a newsboy cap or maybe even a watch can elevate your style? Side note- why don’t more guys own a watch?! It’s such an easy way to make your outfit look more interesting! Test out some accessories and find out what you’re comfortable with, it won’t kill you.
Sneakers
Now, my personal stance on this issue may be a little controversial but this is a safe space so I’m gonna share. I don’t wear ANY sneakers in the wintertime, like even to run errands for an hour. There’s snow outside, it’s icy and they offer me no support against the elements so I’ll often invest in a couple pairs for Spring, Summer and Fall. I’m also not a 21 year old “Sneaker Head” so you’ll never see me rocking the fugly Yeezy 450 Cloud White. I like clean lines and a neutral colour. This year I’m investing in a pair of Good Man Brand Legend Low Tops, in addition to my Adidas Originals, Hugo Boss Zero High-Tops.
Lastly, a new Sweatsuit
Gentlemen, you know you’ve exhausted your athleisure collection this past year. It’s time to invest in some new sweats. I’m sure most of you feel like “I got this!” and there’s nothing wrong with your tried and true staples like Adidas, Nike, Puma, Reebox but also consider trying some new brands. One brand that I would like to suggest is Clothing by AIM.
Though I’m still trying out some new pieces for my essentials list, I’m confident these suggestions will make a big difference in your day to day looks.
