The Good Side of Bad Taste
Now that Spring has sprung, I wanted to see what Fashion Forecasters were predicting for the 2021 seasons. I must admit I was perplexed by what I saw. My main question was “Is there any way to make these trends more realistic and wearable?” Because a lot of the sh*t I saw was out of this world… literally. Fashion Week generally follows this structure: the shows that take place during Fall 2020 represents what the trends will be for Spring/Summer 2021. The shows that happen in Winter 2021 are for Fall 2021/ Winter 2022. To prepare for this post I virtually “attended” roughly 20 – 25 shows, read numerous reviews, articles and interviews. I know many of you are probably thinking “Why should I care about what’s trending?” Answer, these shows dictate what is sold in stores that we usually frequent like Zara, Banana Republic, Topman, H&M and the other fast fashion companies.
So let’s get into it….
The first look that I’ve noticed is LOTS of patterns. Bold styles, bright colours, wild shapes and large florals appear to be a key trend for the 2021 season. Many designers have opted for a mix between soft pastels, bright neon’s and pops of acid hues as the season must have colours. My eyes hurt!
However, I thought Dolce & Gabbana were one of the only designers who made this look something to consider trying. I would suggest checking out stores like Zara and Banana Republic to try this look. They tend to stay in a neutral colour palette and their web site serves as a great look book on how to wear this trend.
Another trend you’ll be seeing a lot of this summer is oversized suits, wide leg trousers, Bermuda shorts and super relaxed shirts are going to be big in 2021. Apparently, every designer wants to embrace designer Hadier Ackerman circa 2015. Over the last few years, the trend was fitted, tight and tailored so I appreciate that designers are offering a more relaxed look. Many of the designers took inspiration from the late 70’s and 80’s. This time around they found a fresh way to modernize and rework the look.
I wouldn’t recommend this look for guys under 5,10”. It’s a lot of fabric and a shorter guy will end up looking like a throwback from any rapper of the early 2000’s closet that they’d much rather forget. You’ll look ridiculous, sorry to burst any bubbles. If you’re like me and have some interest in trying this look out, I suggest going to UNIQLO. This look is a big part of the brand’s ascetic, you are guaranteed to find loose fit, relaxed cut fabrics there.
There is a new concept many designers are trying out this year called New Utility. Think Zookeeper meets G.I. Joe. Designer Ermenegildo Zegna captured this look the best. His show highlighted clean lines, structured designs and a cool colour plate. On the flipside, designers like Dior…. well they paired booty shorts with a utilitarian vest. These looks suggest that we may need to prepare for a literal battle with Corona and these designers want us to be ready. Topman and H&M have already begun dabbling in this trend and although it’s really not my thing they appear to be hitting the New Utility mark.
Hopefully, you’re better prepared to shop for the warmer season. A gentle reminder, please don’t be that guy who has to try every trend. Think about what YOU like, what’s in your comfort zone and what works best for your body type. Drop a comment and let me know what trend you’re eager to try.
